Supporting your Child to Learn to Read at Home

Target Audience: Parents/Guardians of children in Junior & Senior Infants

The teaching of reading has changed over the last 15 -20 years. While our generation learned to read using a whole word approach or Letterland, our children are now learning to read through phonics and this can pose a problem for parents who are not familiar with this concept. 

Experienced teachers Fiona Jennings and Elaine Fitzgerald aim to empower parents with practical strategies and resources to give their child the best possible opportunity to learn to read and spell. During the hour long session we will look at topics like oral language, preparing your child for phonics and finally a deep dive into implementing the phonics approach at home through play, ICT and everyday activities. Attendees will receive a list of the resources discussed.
